Best Dutch Book Design Student Catalogue

(C.) INFORMATION

Design of the student catalogue of the best dutch book designs of 2021, designed with Patrick Hutchinson and Alice Vink, guided by Bart de Baets and commissioned by Esther Scholten.

The design of the catalogue reflects the tactile and instinctive way the student jury interacted with over 300 books during the selection process. With limited time for deep reading, their focus shifted to the immediate qualities of each book—how it felt, opened, bent, or even smelled.

Inspired by this exploration, the selection was scanned in different ways to highlight the materiality and movement of the books. The layout mirrors the jury’s dynamic engagement, creating a visual narrative that celebrates the physicality of the publications.

The catalogue was printed in offset by Drukkerij Tielen

(d.) BIO

Einar Viðar Guðmundsson Thoroddsen is an artist, printmaker, designer, and illustrator based in Iceland. After studying graphic design in the Netherlands, he is now pursuing a master’s in fine arts in Iceland. His practice is in constant flux, shifting from design toward fine art, with a focus on printmaking, experimentation, and material processes. Design has not been completely put in the backseat; instead, it coexists within this new area of exploration.

Einar’s current interests and works explore weathering, time, and layered histories—both in the material sense and in people’s mannerisms and social behaviors. Questioning authorship and drawing influence from the urban landscape and overlooked details of everyday life, he approaches his work by diving headfirst into making, treating it as an open-ended process where mistakes and chance play just as big a role as the final outcome. His practice is marked by curiosity and a search for the unexpected, especially in mistakes, which is where things get interesting.
